Avignon was a much needed break from a big city like Paris. The town was easily walkable and the sites were sparse. We rented a full apartment so we were able to make our own meals with fresh ingredients from the market. Fresh cheeses, meats, breads, and vegetables were easy to find here. We spend a lot of our time hanging out in the many squares listening to music, watching people practice dancing or BMX riding, and playing these incredible wooden games that were set out for everyone to enjoy.
Our second day in Avignon we rented a car to take through the Provence region. We visited tiny villages that were perched on top of hills, villages that were colored red because of the pigments in the ground, and Marseille, a large and grungy city on the Mediterranean. It was a great time seeing the country this way rather than being stuck in a city or flying by it on a high speed train. Overall, we loved the food in France and the country side was beautiful, but the people were hard to interact with purely because they aren’t very open to speaking English.
